Epoxy resins are often used to protect NTC thermistors which can damage and impair performance. In high strength epoxies, a lot of chemicals are needed to protect the thermistor. Industrial grade epoxy resin has strong thermal conductivity and high dielectric strength.
Epoxy coated NTC thermistors are teardrop shaped with a bead and two radial leads. These thermistors are often found in environments and applications where moisture is present. Epoxy-coated NTC thermistors are commonly found in medical equipment used to measure air temperature and air flow. They are also used in automotive applications to control and monitor seat heating functions and room air conditioning. Due to the damaging conditions of cold climates, it is not uncommon to find epoxy bead thermistors in green energy equipment such as wind turbines. When the turbine encounters freezing rain and the air temperature is below freezing point, the icing of the blades will reduce the power and increase the load on the rotor.
